Chapter 6: Thanksgiving
If you haven’t heard we spent turkey day in Turkey! It still makes me giggle a little to say it.
Bryan and I checked out of the hotel and made our way back to the marina to celebrate Thanksgiving with my Dad and the other boaters.
Bryan and I shared what we had done in previous years for the holiday and something our family does as a tradition is watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the dog show afterwards. We are 7 hours behind Florida time so there was still hope of catching the parade online. Bryan managed to find a site that was streaming the parade live and we huddled around the computer to watch it while eating filbert nuts just like at home. It was great to see the floats, balloons, and some of the performances. Sadly during the Radio City Rocket performance there was a slow connection so we got to hear the music but only see segments of kicking. Dinner was at 7:00pm up at the Navigator so we had to cut the parade short by a half an hour, missing Santa. Judging by all of the Black Friday Facebook posts though I’m assuming he ended the parade just like every other year to begin the Christmas season.
The Navigator was putting on a feast for us. The menu included pumpkin soup, turkey with a gravy sauce, potato wedges, and a whole array of vegetables with Crème Caramel for dessert. Stuffing was provided by a group of boaters because it’s not something they have in Turkey.
Dad and Katie’s annual Thanksgiving photo. We take one every year and I’m sure I have at least one or two in the same sweater. There is also generally one with my Dad and Aunt Karen that will just have to come a little later this year.
Dad and I can run through the boat without any problem, I don’t understand why Bryan had such a problem. It was really great getting to spend the holiday with both of them.
A whole lot of turkey… Turkelson (and Bolla) spending turkey day in Turkey. Say that three times fast.
All of the tables were decorated with these turkey centerpieces just like home. There were also fresh flowers and produce from the farmers market which was really cool. I was very impressed.
Dad was enjoying a Raki and talking to Chris, from Sweden, and Janet who was born in England but raised in America and who organized the entire Thanksgiving feast.
The staff of the Navigator brought out three turkeys with sparklers in them while we all finished out pumpkin soup, which was surprisingly delicious.
Looks just like home. The only differences would’ve been the stuffing would’ve had spicy sausage in it and the potatoes would be in mash form. That and there would’ve been the exciting prospect of sandwiches the next day.
This is the Crème Caramel dessert. It’s supposed to be like a Crème Brule but I personally didn’t care for it at all. I would’ve loved a piece of apple pie, but the apples around here are crap and to make apple pie for that many people would’ve taken ages.
Full and happy.
It was also somebody’s birthday! There was a family from Canada passing through that spent a couple of weeks in Kemer and it was Dad Matt’s 50th birthday. They made a round of lemon drop martinis, baked a cake, and had an open bar for a little while.
Just like at home, there was dancing after dinner!
Jaap, from Holland, loves American line dancing. So to celebrate this American holiday he dressed up like a cowboy and…
Led the group in some country line dances. He had been holding lessons twice a week and this was the big performance. It was just like being home!
Jaap could also do a little jitter bug type of dancing too so I enjoyed getting to dance with him. If you look really close behind us there is a plastic donkey that someone smuggled in and decorated for the dinner. I forgot to take a photo of the dressed up donkey!
The holiday was awesome. I got to eat, dance, and spend the time with two of my favorite people.
I left my sweater in the Navigator so Bryan and I went back to get it, and boy am I glad we did.
Everyone needs to do the Macarena at Thanksgiving right?

We may not have been able to see Santa Claus at the end of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but at least we saw his jawbone the day before... Merry Christmas everyone!
PS don't forget to leave out your toothpaste for Santa on Christmas Eve. He could really use it!
